Richard Alan Ellis, MD

Dr. Richard Ellis is a board-certified surgeon who specializes in all aspects of general and laparoscopic surgery. A Memphis native and 1979 graduate of Memphis State University, Dr. Ellis received his medical degree at the University of Tennessee Center for Health Sciences. He has more than 35 years of experience providing a broad range of surgical services and laparoscopic expertise. Dr. Ellis, who is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, joined Baptist Medical Group in 2024.

What can a patient expect when they have you as a doctor?

My patients can expect excellent communication, clinical and technical skills.

What is the most important factor in a doctor patient relationship and why?

Communication. I believe understanding all aspects of the diagnosis and recommended treatment Is vital to effective care. When I talk to my patients, I do my best to ensure they understand their condition and how we will go about treating it.

What hobbies or activities do you enjoy when you're not working?

When I am not working, I enjoy getting exercise, reading, travel, and volunteering as a member of a sports medical staff for secondary school football.

What about your line of work do you find the most rewarding and why?

The most rewarding part of my work is comforting the patient and assisting them with treatment and convalescence.
